Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is well known as a healthy berry, but over the past decade it has also appeared more and more often in skincare products. On labels it may be listed as Hippophae Rhamnoides Fruit Oil or sea buckthorn oil.
Why blemishes form
Blemishes and spots are not simply a matter of excess oil. They form when pores become clogged with dead skin cells, sebum and bacteria that naturally live on the skin, such as Cutibacterium acnes. The skin becomes inflamed, red and sensitive. If it is cleansed too harshly, the barrier weakens and the skin can become even more reactive.
What sea buckthorn offers the skin
- Fatty acids. Sea buckthorn oil contains linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids, which are important components of the skin barrier's lipids.
- Palmitoleic acid. A less common Omega-7 fatty acid that is also naturally present in the skin's sebum.
- Vitamins A and E. Carotenoids and tocopherols act as antioxidants and help the skin feel softer.
- Soothing properties. Sea buckthorn has traditionally been used in the care of irritated, reddened skin.
Small studies with sea buckthorn extract have observed reduced sebum production over a few weeks. These are preliminary results, so sea buckthorn is best seen as a gentle care ingredient rather than a treatment.
Gentle care for blemish-prone skin
Blemish-prone skin is often offered strong, drying products. But skin that lacks moisture and has a weakened barrier may respond with even more irritation. That is why it is worth combining gentle cleansing with barrier support.
- Avoid rubbing or squeezing blemishes, which can increase inflammation.
- Choose non-comedogenic, fast-absorbing products.
- Do not skip moisturising, even for oily skin.
- If blemishes are severe or leave scars, consult a dermatologist.
